The power of words

It's amazing how much of an impact words can have on an individual. By using just one word you can make someone angry to the point of wanted to fight and or kill another person. In class, Dr. J presented us with a scenario about walking into a party and randomly being called a derogatory word. Some said their first reaction would be to fight, while others thought it would be best to ignore the comment or to engage in sort of an intellectual argument in order to expose the ignorance of the person who started the altercation. The fact of the matter is that we too often let the words of other people control us. Why are certain words so powerful ? The negative words that people say often times have a greater impact on us than the positive words do. This is what keeps some of us in a weaker position than others. Letting the words of others control us will never permit true freedom.

  1. I think it is not always the words that have control over people. I think many times it's the intention or feeling that people send with their words that effect people. For example I would never get mad if my brothers called me a stupid Tarijeno (city I was born in) because I know they don't genuinely think that I or the people of my city are stupid. It's all just friendly joshing. Now if someone else had said this depending on how when and why they said it would affect how I would react. If I even had the smallest suspicion that they were serious I would blow up.

  2. Wow that was deep. It is amazing how such little things as words can drive people in such a plethora of emotions from the least extreme to even suicidal. The thing that makes these words so powerful is there meaning not they're actual meaning but what we have been socialized to think that they mean

  3. There will always be people that will say that words do not affect. That is great for them however, I do believe that everyone has gotten mad about something that has been said to them before. The best way to handle it is to avoid situations where instances such as getting called a derogatory word can be avoided. The person trying to start unneeded conflicts is immature and I pity them rather than give them my emotion which is what they desire. Like I said, this is my own personally philosophy and there has been instances where no matter how hard I try or how I reason it something will just get to me.
Someone calling other people rude names is seeking a reaction. Giving them the reaction they desire just means we are succumbing to that person.

  4. My parents always told me turn the other cheek, and that's all I've ever know. I was never engaged in a fight. Although turning the other check is just a way to say your bigger than what the other person is trying to show. There is no point in fighting to make a point. It would just cause harm.
